The LGBT community of Greece is under assault. A Neo-Nazi political organization, Golden Dawn, is rising to power amidst a surge of intense nationalism following the Greek financial crisis. While Golden Dawn terrorizes the LGBT community, one man is confronting them directly: Gregory Vallianatos. Fifty-eight years old, Vallianatos exudes energy and a humble confidence built from years of advocating for the global LGBT community. Well-traveled and educated, Gregory spent time at two American universities in the early 1980s: Northeastern and Harvard. A political consultant working with Vallianatos alleges, “[Gregory] is attempting to make history as the first openly gay and first openly HIV-positive man to run for mayor of Athens.” In fact, on his personal Facebook page, Vallianatos recently posted, “I defend the right of every male and female citizen to call themselves gay, lesbian, trans, queer, bi, straight or anything else they want to, and to say so! Same as the right for everyone who is HIV-positive, such as myself, to say or not to say so.”

Gregory-Vallianatos-AIDSAs a founding member of ACT UP, an international direct action advocacy group dedicated to those members of the LGBT community living with HIV, Gregory is no stranger to controversy—or danger. Reportedly, he has been assaulted and harassed multiple times by Golden Dawn over the years, which makes the mayoral race of Athens even more crucial. According to a source close to Vallianatos, Golden Dawn is within 3% of second place in the race, with Gregory falling behind. The stakes of a Golden Dawn ascension to the mayoral seat of Athens cannot be overstated. As direct violence and persecution against the LGBT community intensifies across the world—from Uganda to Russia to Greece—it is vitally important the LGBT community work together to give voice to those being drowned out by hate-filled rhetoric, physical violence, and unjust laws.

While the European Court of Human Rights has declared leaving Greek homosexuals out of its civil union laws are no longer allowed, thanks to a lawsuit brought by Vallianatos and others, many rights are still denied Greek homosexuals, much like in still-conservative parts of the United States: the right to marry those they love and the right to adopt children among them.

At this time, Gregory needs our help. A man who has dedicated his life to tirelessly advocating for the LGBT community in Greece and around the world, he faces staunch opposition from the Neo-Nazi and rabidly anti-LGBT Golden Dawn—a group that routinely refers to the LGBT community as “sick and abnormal” while simultaneously dropping leaflets across areas of Athens heavily populated by the community which read, “After the immigrants, you are next.”

We need to raise awareness about Gregory’s work—and his candidacy for mayor of Athens. Together, we can make global history.
